Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from engineers, architects, and lighting designers
Technical Accuracy & Reliability
Will COMcheck accept the generated .cxl files?
Yes. COMcheck Buddy generates fully compliant .cxl files that work exactly like files created manually through the COMcheck web interface. The files follow all official COMcheck formatting requirements.
How accurate is the data extraction?
COMcheck Buddy uses AI to extract data, but you should always review the results. The tool shows you exactly what it extracted on a review screen before generating the .cxl file. You can correct any misread values, adjust space activity types, or modify fixture quantities as needed.
Can I trust this for actual project submissions?
COMcheck Buddy is a productivity tool that accelerates data entry, but professional judgment is still required. Always review the extracted data, verify fixture specifications against manufacturer cut sheets, and ensure space activity types match your project's actual use.
File Compatibility & Formats
What file types can I upload?
COMcheck Buddy accepts most common project document formats:
- Documents: PDF, DOCX, TXT
- Spreadsheets: XLSX, CSV, XLS
- Images: PNG, JPG, JPEG, HEIC
- Data: XML
What about CAD files or DWG drawings?
CAD files aren't directly supported, but you can export your lighting schedules and legends as PDFs or take screenshots. Many engineers find it easier to export their schedule tables to Excel/CSV format for the most accurate results.
Can I upload multiple files at once?
Yes! Upload all your project documents together. COMcheck Buddy will analyze each file and automatically aggregate the data from all sources into a single project.
Code Compliance & Standards
Which IECC versions are supported?
Currently supports IECC 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021. Select your code year in the dropdown when creating your project. The tool automatically applies the correct activity types and power density requirements for your selected code version.
How does space activity type detection work?
COMcheck Buddy intelligently analyzes space names (like "Conference Room," "Open Office," "Corridor") and suggests the most appropriate COMcheck activity type. You'll see the top 3 suggestions and can easily switch between them if needed.
What about state-specific amendments or local codes?
COMcheck Buddy generates files based on standard IECC requirements. For jurisdictions with local amendments, review the generated .cxl file in the official COMcheck software where jurisdiction-specific modifications are applied.
Complex Projects & Edge Cases
Can it handle linear lighting (watts per foot)?
Yes! COMcheck Buddy recognizes linear fixtures specified in watts per foot (W/ft) and correctly calculates total wattage when combined with fixture lengths or quantities.
What about mixed-use buildings?
COMcheck Buddy extracts all spaces and their activity types. For mixed-use projects, you can review and adjust the activity type for each space to ensure proper classification (office vs. retail vs. warehouse, etc.).
How does it handle custom or specialty fixtures?
If your fixture schedules include non-standard fixtures, COMcheck Buddy will extract the wattage information. You can edit any fixture descriptions or wattages on the review screen before generating the .cxl file.
What if my project has different fixture schedules for different floors?
Upload all floor plans and schedules together. COMcheck Buddy will combine all fixture types and space data into a single comprehensive project file.
Workflow & Process
When in my design process should I use COMcheck Buddy?
Best used during or after schematic design when you have fixture schedules and space layouts defined. It's perfect for design development and construction document phases when you need to verify code compliance.
How long does the process take?
File upload and processing typically takes 30-60 seconds. Reviewing and editing the extracted data takes 2-5 minutes depending on project complexity. Total time is usually under 10 minutes vs. 1-2 hours of manual entry.
Limitations & Troubleshooting
What are the tool's limitations?
COMcheck Buddy focuses on lighting compliance and currently:
- Does not handle building envelope or mechanical systems
- Requires readable text (scanned documents should be clear)
- Works best with structured data (tables, schedules)
- May need manual review for very complex or non-standard projects
What if COMcheck Buddy misreads my data?
AI isn't perfect, so sometimes mistakes happen. COMcheck Buddy shows all extracted data in an editable confirmation modal before generating your .cxl file. You'll have a chance to modify fixture codes, wattages, quantities, space names, or activity types to ensure accuracy before generating your project file.
My fixtures aren't being detected. What should I do?
Try these solutions:
- Ensure fixture schedules are clearly formatted in tables
- Upload multiple file formats (PDF + Excel) for the same data
- Take high-quality screenshots if working from images
- Check that fixture codes, wattages, and descriptions are clearly visible
Getting Started
Is COMcheck Buddy free to use?
Yes! COMcheck Buddy is currently free to use. If you find the tool helpful, there's an optional "Buy me a coffee" link in the footer to support continued development and offset server costs.
I don't have project files handy. Can I test it?
Absolutely! Visit the How It Works page and download sample files. These are real project data that you can upload to see exactly how the tool works.
